By Nightfall by Michael Cunningham $34.99, Harper Collins

By Nightfall is New York writer, Michael Cunningham’s 6th book.  He won a Pulitzer Prize for The Hours.    In his new book we meet 44 year old Peter Harris who is a player in New York’s contemporary art dealing scene.  His life comes complete with a loft apartment, twenty years of marriage and a grown daughter.  His world is challenged when his wife’s young drug addict brother comes to stay.  Ethan known as Mizzy or the Mistake by his parents and older sisters is a spoilt young twenty-something who is yet to find a sure way in the world.  His presence stirs up Peter’s world view of his marriage, the artists he is working with, and honest communication.

Cunningham writes a convincing story of New York and its artists and art buyers.  He also creates a very realistic series of reflections on marriage.  Peter’s wife Rebecca comes from a very together family and seems very sure of herself.  Mizzy is a provocative young beauty who appears quietly unaware of the effect he is having on his brother in law.    His motives seem unclear.

In the end this book is the story of one man’s mid life crisis.  The relationships and story flow effortlessly and draw you in.  Delightfully told and a great story of beguiling sensuality and intriguing danger.
